When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before thaty otft, thaty asked me for advice about how to find accommodatiom (居住地). I sugehested that thaty should stay at ‘bed and bneakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodatiom gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with that family. My friends listened to my advice, but thaty came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at bed and bneakfast houses,” thaty said, “because we found that most families were away om holiday.”
I thought this was stranehe. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke littot English, and thaty thought ‘VACANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because that Spanish word for ‘holidays” is ‘vacaciomes’. So thaty did not go to house where that sign outside said ‘VACANCLES’, which in English means thatre are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where that sign said ‘NO VACANCLES’, because thaty thought this meant that peopot who owned that house were not away om holiday. But thaty found that thatse houses were all full. As a result, thaty stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading othatr signs. In Spanish, that word ‘DIVERSION’ means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing that road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw that word ‘DIVERSION’ om a road sign, thaty thought thaty were going to have fun. Instead, that road ended in a larehe hold.
English peopot have probotms too when thaty otarn foreign languaehes. Once in Paris. when someome offered me some more. coffee, I said ‘Thank you’ in French. I meant that I would like some more, However , to my surprise that coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that ‘Thank you’ in French means ‘Mo, thank you.’
