Tonight on Crime Scene... (a translation from Rimfrost magazine)

Last time I aired my irritation about modern vampire movies and their annoying christian propaganda (!). So I thought, while I'm at it, why not mention something about today's TV series that has bugged me for a while now? Crimes, as they are so popular these days, or at least they appear to be, because when I turn on the TV - erm, yes, I do that sometimes - they seem to be on all the time.

Yes, we surely love murder to be entertainment and I guess there is nothing wrong with that. I admit I also love to watch old fashioned murder mysteries. I love Midsummer Murders, for example; good english crime in Miss Marple-style, about a sleepy village and its mysteries, strange and suspicious people, neighbours, secret lovers, vengeful women, the victim... well, and sometimes we cannot really blame the murderer for killing him or her (don't we all go round fantasizing about a certain pest that we would just love to get rid of...?).

OK, so what is it that I react to so much? Well it's the modern high tech crimes that try to get our attention with their often tasteless stories that reveal without doubt that they have been written by men. It really irritates me when all channels announce: "and tonight on Crime Scene: a dangerous and intelligent serial killer..." who, of course, enjoys chasing and torturing "defenceless" women... and yet again we have to watch a fucked-up, insecure dickhead chasing screaming girls who cry and whimper in the claws of this merciless man, begging "oh, please don't hurt me", while he kills them. The "intelligent" killer also manages always somehow to kidnap the female inspector working on the case, talk to her about "domination", make her cry and in the end she is rescured by the hero; her male collegue Inspector X. Now isn't that nice?

Seriously, what are the script writers trying to say with their exciting entertainment? That they try hard to uphold the idea that women are victims without any survival instincts? Good girls who allow themselves nicely to get killed? Argh! This really speaks to the wild animal in me!

I'm so bloody tired of this stereotyped woman = victim entertainment. Walking in desolate urban areas alone at night is never wise and especially not without something to protect oneself with (or at least a good "get away" plan, something I have plenty of experience with). Common sense, really and this goes for both men and women. Life is not always safe and cosy. So how about putting some diverse and real life women characters into the scenes? How about a big and angry lady, who hits the attacker real good over the head and goes "what the fuck, now you gonna get it you jerk!" Or how about the kidnapped girl who instead of the whimpering voice "oh, please don't hurt me", says with an angry hissing "Listen you worm, if you take me down I'll haunt your mind eternally!". I can't be the only one here who believes in "if you go down, go down fighting", can I? So how about some crime variation?

Maybe I should write some crime scripts... "Inspector X is chasing a mysterious and intelligent serial killer woman who takes out mean crooks in rather macabre ways..." Or how about this: "Tonight on Crime Scene: a rapist is found dead in a park, naked with a stick up his arse... who was the woman who did this to him?"

Now this is the kind of stuff I would like to see!
